The FAMiLY LEADER Chief Counsel Chuck Hurley was surprised to run into Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad over the lunch hour yesterday.
And you'd better believe the topic of defunding Planned Parenthood came up.
Our impromptu meeting made two things clear. First: You're getting to him. Your phone calls, emails, and support of the "Keep Your Promise" campaign are making an impact on the governor.
Branstad also told Chuck to "call off your attack dogs."
Only … I don't believe the people of Iowa are "attack dogs." I believe they're people passionate about life and about ending the public funding of Planned Parenthood's atrocities.
That's why I'm encouraging you today to call Branstad's office again. Email him. And if you happen to see him at lunch or at a Hawkeye game, don't be afraid to talk with him and let him know how you feel.
The second thing that came out of that meeting is also good news: Chuck had the opportunity to clear up some of the misunderstandings about what we're asking Branstad to do, and the governor agreed in front of witnesses to meet with our lawyers and national attorneys to hear how he can defund Planned Parenthood in Iowa … now.
Let's hope the governor follows through on his commitment – both to meet with our attorneys and to defund Planned Parenthood – and let's keep up the pressure until our leaders hear us loud and clear: The taxpayers of Iowa should not be forced to fund an organization they morally object to.
